Tour Listening – Al Green’s “Lay it Down”

Al Green is a major influence of Allen Stone and personally one of my earliest introductions to soul music. I remember taking a lady friend to see his show at The Paramount in college and was so impressed by his band, his singing, his charisma (throwing roses into the audience), and his general swagger. I was so enthralled by the show, by his band, by everything. After the show I told my mom about it and she told me about the time SHE saw Al in college on a date and had the same experience. I love that Al is and has always been the man. He’s timeless.

“Lay it Down” has been on constant repeat this tour. When I’m working, cooking, or just having a bourbon, this is the record. Questlove produced “Lay It Down” and did a killer job. It’s classic Al with modern touches. Al’s duet with Corinne Bailey Rae is stunning, the duet with John Legend won Al and John a Grammy for the performance. So many other gems on this record- I hope you enjoy it too!
